A Letter for a High School Senior in Their Final Weeks

Dear Senior,

Look at you! You are so close! All those times you thought high school would never come to an end and now you are on the final stretch. You have made it to you last few weeks of a milestone in your life. You should be proud of yourself for how far you have come.

You say you're not gonna miss it. I get it, I said it too. I still believe it, but I want to tell you a few things that you will miss. You will miss the simplicity. You will miss the easy assignments (yes trust me they are easy compared to college). You will miss how much your teachers care and want you to succeed (most professors do not). You will miss the good times you had with members of your class, even if you claim that you hate them all. Trust me, you will miss having everyone together at once. You will miss your laundry being clean and folded. You will miss the home cooked meals (dorm food gets boring fast). You will miss your classes being in one building (enjoy walking more, at least you get more exercise), you will miss having more free time than ever to enjoy time with family or friends, you will miss being so close to your family, and while there are many other things, you will miss the things that come with being a high schooler. Enjoy the simple things, because they do not last.

The last few weeks are the last times that you will be with your whole class. The crazy thing is, they are also the last times that you will see some of the people in your class, ever. They are also the last few weeks that you will probably talk to any of your high school friends, or at least hang out with them on a regular basis. You think things will not change when you graduate, but that is definitely not true. You go to separate colleges and make new friends, and while you may still talk, sometimes it is just not the same. Take every memory from the last few weeks and store it in the back of your mind, because it is so easy to forget the things you actually enjoyed about high school. Make some great memories with your classmates, even the ones you do not talk to on a regular basis. Remember how excited you were to try everything your freshman year, be that excited to do it for the last time too.

The teachers that you grew close to in your high school years will always be there, but they have a life separate from you now. These are the last times you will see them almost daily and get to enjoy their presence. Take every opportunity you can to tell them you appreciate them, and let them know they have made a difference in your life. They have been there for you for a while, so let them know you are grateful.

Your family might be annoying you now, but trust me when I say you will miss them when you leave for college. Facetiming and looking at pictures of them is not the same, trust me. You will miss their dumb jokes and annoying laughs when you are gone. Spend time with them when you can and thank them for all they have done for you.

When finishing your last few weeks, you might ponder on old memories and see all the good things that happened. When you graduate, there may be times that you miss it. It is okay to miss high school, but know that college brings so many fun experiences and new opportunities with it. You will enjoy making new memories and having more freedom in college. Know that high school is not the best four years of your life. The people that tell you that are very wrong. You will most likely love college. Yes, the assignments are harder, but you make some of your life long friends in college and your experiences out weigh the hard assignments.

Last but not least, congratulations, you have made it. You made it to your last few weeks of high school. Enjoy them. Make them fun. This does not give you a free ticket to stop trying though. Finish the semester strong, try hard on your finals and pay attention in class. Share a good memory you have with someone, even if you do not really talk anymore. This may be the last time you see them. Your lasts are now becoming your firsts. Make it count.

Sincerely,
A College Freshman
